Sunningdale Old Course and Golf Club – Episode #13
Posted on 02. Sep, 2009 by Andy Brown in Golf, Golf Courses
In this episode I visited the British Senior Open Championship presented by Mastercard which was taking place at The Old Course at Sunningdale Golf Course for the first time.
Sunningdale Old Course is arguably one of the best designed heathland courses in the UK. It is located approximately 10 miles from Heathrow Airport and just 25 miles from the centre of London.
Amongst its many accolades Sunningdale’s Old Course has been ranked by Golf Digest Magazine #12 amongst courses outside the United States in 2009. It was also ranked in the most recent Top 100 Golf Courses of the World poll in 2009 as #2 in England, #10 in the UK and #19 in the world.
History of the course
Sunningdale has two stunning golf courses, the Old Course and the New Course. The Old Course, which opened in 1901, was designed by Willie Park Jnr and it has changed very little since then. Sunningdale is also lucky enough to boast a second course, called the New Course, which opened in 1923 and was designed by Harry Shapland Colt
Hosting the Senior Open Championship
Sunningdale Old Course has served as the site of some of the most important and momentous tournaments in Britain. Bobby Jones famously said of this course “I wish I could take this course home with me” after he successfully scored 66-68 over it during qualifying for the 1926 British Open. His round, which consisted of 33 full strokes and 33 putts, with every hole played in either 3 or 4; has often been described as the perfect round of golf. Events held at Sunningdale over the last decade have includes the qualifying competitions for the British Open, multiple Women’s British Opens and in 1987 the Walker Cup was played here for the first time ever on an inland course in the UK.
For 22 years The British Senior Open has been played at links courses around the UK so it was a bold move by the R&A this year to move the competition inland for the first time. It is a decision which has the backing of many of the best golfers in the world class field which includes Watson, Faldo, Norman, Funk, Torrance and Woosnam as it presented them with the perfect inland challenge.
During this episode I also met up with David Edwards who featured in episode 6 at the London Golf Show. He was invited by the European Tour to perform his golf trick shots routine during the Seniors at Sunningdale. During our chat David told me he was enjoying attending the Seniors not only as a performer but also it gave him the opportunity to watch some of the great players he used to play alongside.
The Old Course
Sunningdale’s Old Course boasts being home to some of the best springy golfing turf in the world of golf. Beneath it is ideal sandy subsoil, which is a feature of heathland golf courses. This course was amongst the first successful golf courses to be located away from the seaside, as many people thought that turf wouldn’t grow well in such an inland region. Sunningdale’s glorious fairways are set amidst trees, mostly pine and silver birch, and beautiful blooming heather which is everywhere in the rough.
Every hole at Sunningdale Old Course provides golfers with a combination of fantastic greens, fast-running fairways and stunning views. The standout holes which I feature in this episode are the 5th and 10th holes.
5th Hole
The 5th hole is a superb 419-yard par 4. With its elevated tee, which gives you a fantastic view of the fairway, this is one of the best driving holes I’ve ever seen – I’m not surprised this hole is named in The 500 World’s Greatest Golf Holes.
10th Hole
The 10th hole is a 475-yards par 4. This is another great driving hole with an elevated tee providing fantastic views. It is the longest of the par 4 holes on the back 9, it has bunkers lining the right hand side and the best part is you get an opportunity to enjoy a well-earned drink and sausage sandwich at the half-way hut after you’ve putted in!
If you get a chance I thoroughly recommend you pay a visit to Sunningdale, one of Europe’s top golf courses.

Turning 62 in Nov. ’09. Play twice a week – looking forward to playing more. Currently playing in the local Veterans Competition each Mon. Many have a mode of transport (cart, moped, mini-motorbike, motorised buggies).Golf is one of my best forms of exercise as I prefer to walk the courses. Have slipped from 18 to 19 but trying to get back. More practice!

I am currently 63 years old. I play 2-3 rounds of golf per week, and also play tennis and bowl in a league. I’m also working part time, so these activities keep me busy and fulfilled. Thanks for the tips and videos, Andy. You seem like a fine young man.

Well I am only 62 and have had major back surgery several times but I am still confident that I will play socially into the later years of my life. I walk most courses but if they are to hilly or my back is saying no I take the golf buggie. If you take your time ther is no reason not to play well into your later years.

Hurt my already bad back in Jan. and couldn’t play till this last week. lost about 30/40 yards off the tee but the rest of the game is still there.7.2 handicap. taught the game for over 30 years. just relax let the body stay loose.and you will play a long time. everybody puts to much tenions on them selves and ends up batting the ball instead of just going thru it. RELAX!!!!!!!!

Hi Andy, I’m 66 years old. I Live With Terror every day but she let’s me play golf twice a week. (I have a shirt with this saying on the back of it.) My average score is about 84. I hope to keep playing for many, many years. The secret to longevity on the course is to stay in good health, and never, never take your game to seriously. And oh, I find it helps to pray regularly also.

Andy, enjoyed your video of sunningdale, golf course, i’d love to play it some-day.. As for my age, I was born 01/19/1927, you figure it out.
I was a cancer patient, 08/07/07, did not care about golf for 2 years, my weight went from 235 lbs, down to 160 lbs. , i’m slowly regaining some weight and strength, ..
I didn’t start the game until I was 38 yrs old, and fell in love with it, played on a team at Mission Lakes C.C., was a 9.8 index, and loved Match play… Now i’m trying to get back to the game

Wow Andy..I’m only 79, but can’t add too much to the above posts. Game is still decent, just have to adjust for a slight lack of distance. Probably 10-15 yds. Heck, we have 14 tools, right? just use a longer club. I know hit a 5/6 rather than a 7.Had a complete left knee replacement which necessitated an adjustment in the swing, but once figgured out, no problem,,Keep up the good work, enjoy your stuff.

I started playing at 51 and am now 68 and still playing, currently mostly in Belgium. I plan to visit Taupo this winter (see John Matthews in this list) so maybe I will get to meet and play with him and the scootering nonogenerians!

At 67, have been trying to beat my 3 younger brothers for the past 50 years. They continue to get the best of me, but am gaining lately. Hit my best ever 77 a couple weeks ago. Will visit my 65 year old brother this weekend and hope to get plenty of strokes (he plays to a 2.). We all started as caddies. But they always carried the A Flight golfers’ bags, so they picked up better habits (that’s how I explain my inferior play.). Our father hit his age at 75…that’s the goal.

Eighty seven BUT let me tell you about my father (no, he’s not playing any more…I think). At 92 he was still waling AND pulling his cart (trolley?) up and down a hilly course in Southern Maryland. Often he was asked, “Gus, have you ever shot your age?” His stock reply was, “Oh sure. I do it twice a day…once on the front nine and then again on the back.”
PS: Gus went into that BIG DIVOT at age 94. As for me, I won the Florida State Senior Games Championship at age 70 and was the Medalist, to boot.

Hi Andy;
I will be 70 in two months and still enjoy playing golf even though it causes me to have some pain, one of the things that you will learn to live with as you gain some years.
Yes I am looking forward to playing as long as some of the
people i play with, I live in a retirement comunity where we have 9 golf courses, the average age is probably 80 and it is hard to get a tee time in the summer. I have never been to the UK but the Sunningdale course looks a lot like our courses here in Arkansas USA. have a nice day and live long and play golf.

I am 65. Been playing since I was a junior in high school. For most of my golfing life I have been a 12 to 16 handicap. You would think after playing for 40 years I would get better…. well I did. My last Ginn card came back with a 10 on it. Now I am all puffed up and am thinking about a 9. I might even practice now. Don’t know how long “forever” is but that’s how long I plan on playing.

02. Sep, 2009
I am soon to be 55. I told my doctor during a physical that I will play as long as I can stand it. I play at best 27 holes two times week. Hope to be doing this for as many years as the good Lord allows. Have blessed day Tom

I’m 57 , I have hade multiple surgeries both rotator cuffs, hiatas hernia repair and a old motor vehical accident has left me slightly off balance with arthritis and lower back pain. I started playing golf when I was getting beat up too badly at all the high risk sports (5 years ago). I used the new 4 magic moves you prescribed and I have have had some fantastic results. My lowest score was an 86. I followed the book faithfully and I can keep the ball straight and down the middle and that has to be the approach if you lack distance.

I truely love your videos. My dad was born is Clydebank Scotland. And I have always longed to go play over there. I am 56 playing better then ever hitting longer and straighter wether technology or not don’t care. Barring any further back or knee problems I should be playing into my 80′s or longer. I live in Texas now so the weather is warm and we play almost all year round.

I have never been a ‘good’ golfer. I started in my back yard in my early thirties. Soon was playing bogie golf. I still play about once a week getting in 40 -45 rounds a year. I will be 79 in Dec 09. I’ve lost a few strokes since my 30′s but my handicap (I calculate it from data at USGA website) is in the upper 20′s.
Try this for feeling better with age:
L-Arginine hcl 400mg
L-Ornithine hcl 300 mg
L-Lysine hcl 100 mg
L-Glutamine hcl 300 mg
L-Glycine hcl 100 mg
You can add
Ornighine Alphaketoglutarate 100mg
and Colostrum (bovine) 300 mg
if you wish.
You can take twice as much per day without problems.
Best taken on an empty stomach at bedtime.
Happy Golfing.

I am 71 and play 3-4 times a week at the beautiful Gavea Golf Club here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It’s a spectacular course climbing the hills on the outskirts of Rio with breathtaking views of the beaches. It’s a difficult course, but many 80+ members play regularly, most of them using electric carts.
I hope the good Lord will grant me the health to keep on enjoying this frustrating game well into my 90s!

I am 72 and play most days. I go to New Zealand for 6 months in November,I join the local golf club in Taupo and play with their Seniors, I am the youngest in the group by 8 years, known as young John; there are at least 3 in their 90s. What is strange to see is a lot of Seniors use scooters and hook their wheels and clubs on the back!! its such an unstuffy country. regards JM

Hi Andy
I’ve just had my 75th birthday. Started playing when I was 66 but can’t get off 28 handicap. playing stapleford I usually blank out 4 or 5 holes yet still get between 28 and 32 points. I guess consistency is the problem. Hit the ball well of the tee but can’t chip and put! Thanks for your encouragement – will carry on regardless.
Derek.

Hi Andy, I’m 21 years old, so far the youngest, and I can truly say I plan on playing golf till’ the day I die. When I die, it will be on the golf course, with a 7 iron in hand (my favorite club). You want to play golf until you’re in your 90′s? Run 3-4 times a week, and eat healthy. If running doesn’t work for you due to bad joints or what have you, try walking, it will help!

I’m a “born again” golfer. I was lucky to learn to swing when I was 18 because an injury kept me from rugby for a season. I played a fair bit in my twenties and then a busy job and family arrived so no golf for 36 years!. I am now rising 68 and at 11 my handicap is almost back to where it was all those years ago. My motto is “You don’t slow up because you get old. You get old because you slow up” So I don’t see myself stopping any time soon

I am now 74 and two weeks before my 74th birthday I shot 74 gross around my home course (Formby). Oh how I wish it had been two weeks later – it may never happen again!!. I have played for 60 years and intend to continue as long as my mind and body allows. My best handicap when I was younger was 5, but now, unfortunately, it has reached double figures. I say to all golfers, just keep going – its a wonderful game in beautiful surroundings with good friends. What more could we want?

Ok well I am the youngster at 51
I would hope that I will also play until I need to tee off at the pearly gates (some time yet)
But just a comment, Some of the best times I have ever had on the golf course is playing with the older guys and girls, fantastic attitudes, relaxed about most things and have unlimited patience, and most have a life time of great stories to tell.
It does not matter how good the Hcp is, they just play to enjoy, not the same when I play with our younger more competitive members.
I am sure this rubs off on my game, as I have shot my best scores in this illustrious company.
Keep up the good work
Ted Lewis

Hi Andy!
I am 72 and play a couple of times a week with a group of guys in the same age bracket – we have a couple of 80 plus chaps who play regularly with us.
I believe that diet and simple stretching exercises will keep you playing for years. Gary Player in his book “Golf Begins At 50″ illustrates a number of stretching exercises which seniors should follow whether they play golf or not.

Hi Andy,
I am 71 and playing twice a week with three mates. I don’t have an official handicap but work out my own and now calculate this as 24. I also play table tennis and enjoy square dancing so the best way to grow old gracefully is to carry on as long as possible doing all those activities you love, golf in particular.
Great videos by the way.

Yes, it is nice to be nice and nice to be old and not have to work and be able to play golf all day and every day. I now live in New Zealand and have just watched this video which brought back memories of the England Ladies Open which has been held at Sunningdale several times.
I am 63 years old and have been playing golf for about 15 years at weekends mainly until I retired and came to New Zealand where I now play at what is commonly known as the best golf links course in the Southern Hemisphere at Pararaparaumu Beach Golf Club. Tiger came and played in our Open in 2001 and did not enjoy the course. The weather was foul for most of the week which did not help the Club’s finances nor Tiger’s game which included a 4 putt on one of the greens.
I play to play for at least another 10 years or more. and thank you for sending me the video.

The wife and I are 75 and 76. We try to get out at least two or three days a week to strike the ball. A lot depends on weather, since we live in the middle of the Sonoran desert, where summer temperatures often exceed 40 C from June through August. We go to the range on odd days to practice, and I can say that your New Four Magic Moves has given me considerably more distance off the tee box, and keeps my ball a lot nearer to the middle of the fairways. We enjoy your videos and emails and hope to play Sunningdale the next time we visit our son living in Woking.

Andy, enjoy your videos and knowledge you impart on the game. I am turning 75, play a couple times a week with a local retired group. We play many different courses within a 50-75mi radius and have fun and we all love the game. My only problem is I wish the game loved me back as much as I love it. But, I hope to play into my 90′s. My old Mom, if she makes it to February 2010 will be l00 years young. I hope I have her genes, in fact, I hope I have ALL her genes. She is the last surviving sibling of 10 and I am the last survivor in our immediate family. Hope to see you on the fairways…………..Many Thanks.

Sunningdale was great…..I started playing golf seriously three years ago..I am now 64 and play 2-3 times a week. I walk about half of that. Love playing, thats all that matters, although I do keep score.

Enjoy your weekly inputs. Am 70 in 2 weeks and have been away fom the game since March having torn a rotator cuff tendon in left houlder. Have just had all clear from the surgeon so can get back to hitting a ball and intend to do so until I die. Till the accident I was hitting the ball straight and at least as far as 20 years ago and heading down towards 10 h/cap for first time in years thanks to the new 4 magic moves. Keep up the good work and good luck.

I’m 79yrs. young, I try to stay in shape. When I go out of the door each morning. I do 7 or 8 overhand chin ups. Not many my age can do that. I try also do 25 or 30 push ups each morning.
I don’t think God will ever let me shoot my age.
Thanks for the good pictures you send my way.
You have to be one of the nicest person I know through email.

Hi Andy;
I am 71 years young and going strong. Shot 77 this week on a 6300 yd course not long. Usually in the low 80s and I think I wont quit as long as I can swing a club. We play about 4 days a week here in the San Francisco area year round. The weather is perfect for golf. Hope to shoot my age before 75. Keep up the good work. I have enjoyed your site and articles very much. BOB

I also am 69 years old–been playing the game for 57 years. Took a break raising children adn playing serious tennis, but a neck injury ended that, and I’m back to golf. Live in Bend, Oregon, the home of Golf Digest’s best new course in the U.S. in 2008, Tetherow, designed by Bruce McKay Kidd(Bandon Dunes/St. Andrews #12 designer). Both parents made it into the 90′s, and I expect to play for many years. Just got the new FXiQ(Calloway) and hitting the drives 230-250 and straight. Really excited about golf again..it’s fun, but humbling. Shoot in the mid 80′s, take a cart, and have a nap after(they are good for you).

I’m 47. I currently have a pinched nerve around my C5, C6,C7 vertebra. My legs are weak and I find it difficult to walk and have pins and needles in my hands. Xrays revealed an old trauma and narrowing of the spaces. I’ve been to a chiropractor.. he couldnt fix it. He’s going to refer me to a neurologist. I guess I will be off golf for a while.

I’m 70 and usually play with a senior’s club but have played most of the courses in the Canadian Rockies and in Arizona and Hawaii. I usually use a pull-cart and,if tee time permits ,will go to the gym for a light work-out before playing. I never think about how long I will be playing; just keep plugging along. Still ski too.

I am 61 years played golf for past 15 years and now with Index 7.0. I hope to play golf till I am physically able and would like to die while golfing.
I try to be fit so that I can enjoy my golf with minimum injuries.
I golf at least twice a week, but that said, once I played for 10 consecutive days and loved it.
hope to golf everyday as some of the chaps are now enjoying…

I’m a young 65 & hope to keep playing for a lot longer. Even if the golf gets a bit ordinary I still enjoy the exercise! – (our course in the Blue Mountains of Australia is quite hilly but I still walk around it) – I ‘ll be sad to give it up but lower back problems are emerging

We have a lady aged 94 (95 in December 09) who plays golf twice a week, 18 holes around our very challenging Keysborough Golf Course in the sand belt Melbourne. She walks at least one of these times and holds a handicap of 37 now. We are all very much in awe of Win. Our next senior lady is 85 who plays 3 times a week and walks the long course every time.! It has been very difficult for everyone this winter with winds around 100kmh. Congratulations to these “girls”

I am or will be 60 in 3 month and I am just coming back from a very bad accident almost deadly, thanks to great doctors and the grace of God I am alive and playing again.
Went from a 7 hdp to being happy with breaking 100 but life is good.
I hope I will play until my last days golf is good for me.
I never played sunningdale although I was close to it on my way to Scotland, maybe next time if there is one.
Keep on playing and be happy. Fairways and greens.
Jorge.

I am 69 years of age. Starting playing at the ripe old age of 62. My best score is 76. I an currently an 18 handicapper. My experience is trial and error. Thought of taking lessons but I just want to play with my natural ability and continue to have fun with golfers of all ages, meaning I have not discovered a Pro that can improve me naturally. I love your videos and use a lot of your information to improve my game. Continue the good work! The oldest gentleman I have played with was 92, he played bogey golf :0)

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the video. I turned 69 last week on the 28th of August and I don’t have any plans to ever stop playing golf.
I am retiring from work in October and hope to play as often as I can God willing.

I am currently 71… play every day.. have a 12 handicap which I lie about as I will not turn in a score over 90.. I wish to play with better players and if I lose I can handle that…… I have the skills and still play from the tips.. It’s just the three or four errant shots a round that put me in the high 80′s instead of 78-79…… God… I hate this game ! DJ
