Today on HomeofGolf.TV Hamish Steedman from the St Andrews Golf Company describes the rut iron. Playing the ball as it lies was one of the original 13 rules of golf. Early 19th century golf was played on common land where the golfer had to contend with other users. They would leaves ruts in the ground possibly by playing football or practicing their archery. Carts carrying seaweed and sand would also leave their traces, and thus the rut iron was perfect for extracting the ball form such lies.
